Morgan Stanley Investment Management is carving out its China-focused private equity team from the rest of the region as the chief executive and chief investment officers for Asia private equity retire, according to a memo seen by Pensions & Investments. Hong Kong-based Chin Chou will retire from his position as chief executive officer of Asia private equity at Morgan Stanley, which he first joined in New York in 1987. Andrew Hawkyard, also based in Hong Kong, will also retire from his role as chief investment officer of private equity in Asia after 24 years with the firm. Head of Yuan-Denominated Funds Jun Xu will now lead all China-focused private equity investments, while Nirav Mehta and Arjun Saigal, co-heads of India private equity, will take up the role of co-heads of private equity Asia ex-China. As a result, the firm will combine the China onshore and offshore private equity investing teams into one private equity China team. The private equity Asia ex-China teams will continue their focus across the region, with India being a core growth opportunity, the memo said. A spokesperson confirmed the contents of the memo. Morgan Stanley Private Equity Asia is the Asia-focused private equity investment platform within MSIM. The manager had $1.5 trillion in assets under management as of Dec. 31.
